The KKE has launched a massive political campaign ahead of the strike on 28 February, with its cadres all over Greece holding hundreds of meetings, tours and speeches in workplaces in support of the strike, stressing that “the big employers, the government and the state must feel that the people who are determined to struggle are breathing down their necks! The profits of the capitalists suffocate the needs of the people. Our breath of life is the struggle for our just cause to overthrow this system!”.

Dimitris Koutsoumbas, GS of the CC of the KKE, spoke on Wednesday 26 February in Peristeri, a working-class district of western Athens, and on Thursday 27 February to the workers at the “Hellenic Train” factory in Piraeus.

In his statements, Dimitris Koutsoumbas stressed the importance of the success of the strike. “What basically frightens the system and its governments is that the working people are actively targeting the capitalist profit, the culprit of all the heinous crimes that are happening all around us, the daily tragedies of this system like Tempe. That is why the slogan of Friday’s mass strike mobilization must be the slogan that was coined in the demonstrations and strikes that broke out immediately after the crime and that was loudly heard last year in the strike on the one year anniversary of the crime in Tempe: “Their profits or our lives!”. It is the action of the people, and above all the possibility that it could meet with the KKE's political proposal for a way out, that the staffs of the system are afraid of, and that is why they will try to support the efforts to reform the political scene on the basis of false dilemmas. They know very well that no bourgeois government, especially in times like these, can last long. Sooner or later it will have to face the consequences of its policies,” he stressed.

“The solution does not lie in old formulas that bring disappointment and disillusionment and take us backwards. We have confidence in the power of the organized workers’–people’s movement to determine developments in its favour. We show confidence in our just cause, in the struggle for a new organization of the economy and society, where our lives will not be considered as a cost, where the satisfaction of the needs of the people and society will be the motive for the development of the economy, where capitalist profit will be abolished and power will be in the hands of the people.

In the society where large factories and infrastructure will be socialized and all the productive potential of the country will be developed through scientific central planning, for the benefit of the people and not for the profit of a handful of parasites. We are looking ahead, we are resolutely fighting all the battles that are currently underway.

In the remaining hours, we are doing our utmost to make the 28 February strike the biggest in many years. So that those who fear people’s action to fail. So that our people to emerge stronger for the next struggles to come,” he concluded.
